New York-After years of growth, online sales are forecast to contract this year due to continuing recessionary pressure.

The projected decline, reported by Internet market research company eMarketer in its report, “E-Commerce in a Recession,” will be slight, down just 0.4% to $133 billion. This compares with e-commerce sales growth (excluding travel) last year of 4.6% and 20% in 2007.

EMarketer projects that from 2011 to 2013, online sales will rebound to double-digit growth, “assuming that the economy will begin to recover in 2010.”
